Do you ever feel you have no time for yourself? Most of us get so busy in our lives, there is very little time to slow down and reflect.

I’ve been making more time lately to nurture my spiritual side and take time for self-reflection. To think about the important questions like “What is my purpose in life”? and “How can I be of more service to others?”
Joseph Campbell said in his famous “Power of Myth” interviews:
“What is it you intended? You’re always doing something that is required of you. Where is your bliss station? You have to try to find it.”
He suggests a bliss station is a place where you disengage from the world and from all your concerns. He calls it a place of “creative incubation”.
To Campbell, following your bliss meant doing the things that your heart most deeply desires.
I love that!
I have several bliss stations. One is a lovely room in my home where I meditate and where I create art. Another is a cozy spot on my deck surrounded by trees and flowers. A third is the beautiful walking path by the river where I walk almost every day.
I’ve been incubating ideas about the new direction of my business. This quiet time is so important for me to reflect on changes I want to make. If I get too busy with my day-to-day routine, I’ll keep playing small forever. For me I feel it’s time to dream bigger and think about how I can make a bigger impact in the world.
Campbell goes on to say:
“[A sacred place] is an absolute necessity for anybody today. You must have a room, or a certain hour or so a day, where you don’t know what was in the newspapers that morning, you don’t know who your friends are, you don’t know what you owe anybody, you don’t know what anybody owes to you. This is a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are and what you might be. This is the place of creative incubation. At first you may find that nothing happens there. But if you have a sacred place and use it, something eventually will happen.”
Here are some questions I invite you to consider so you can allow more joy, bliss and fulfillment into your life:
- Do I have a ‘bliss station’ or a special place for ‘creative incubation’?
- Am I doing the things that my heart most deeply desires?
- Is it time to dream bigger about how I can make a positive impact in the world?
- How can I step back from my life to get in touch with what calls to me now as the next small step I could take to follow my heart and the work I feel called to do?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.

That is a lovely thought – having a bliss station. I like yours, will you share? 🙂 Thank you for this blog. I have some times where I will sit and reflect but certainly not consistently. I will see what I can do.
I’m happy to share my ideas Jeanette. Good luck with following your bliss!
I just listened to the recording on bliss and so glad you shared it. I am on a deep spiritual path and do yoga and meditation regularly.
Its the only way I can exist now
It also inspires me as a coach and professional organizer
