We had our members call last night with guest speaker Barbara Richards of Vision Work Coaching speaking on “Give Your Dream a Plan: Five Questions to Ignite Extraordinary Results in 2008”.
Barb walked us through the steps and questions we need to ask ourselves to create a simple business plan to guide our actions for the years ahead. She said traditional planning is very heavy and complex and can be constrictive for creative entrepreneurs – which is most of the women I work. Barb recommends keeping your plan to just one page.
We creative types need an easier way to plan, and more fluid simple planning tools. Ask yourself, ‘What do I want this year?’ ‘Where do I think I’m going?’ Let out your heart’s desires. Many women struggle with planning, and don’t write down their goals and objectives because they feel that by writing them down they’re committing to take action.
The five parts of the one-page plan are Vision, Mission, Objectives, Strategies, and Plans. Plans in this context are more like projects or action plans. They are not the detailed to do list.
Barb recommended the book “The One Page Business Plan” by Jim Horan.
For planning purposes, think ahead 1 year if you’re a start up, 3 years if you’re an established business. Think about what you like and don’t like in your business right now. What you want more of and what you want less of in the coming year.
Two things that Barb includes in her model that I really like are the idea of who you want to BE in your business and life, not just what you want to DO. She also suggests creating a life vision as well as a business vision. Your business is meant to serve your life.
If you’re a visual person, you can create a collage of your vision to remind you every day of what you want to attract or create. A great online tool for this is at Vision Board.
